Part of DLIS’ role is to act as a connector and incubator. We support projects that align with our mandate, and assist with design, logistics, partnership development, financial administration, budget management and tailored support to help our partners succeed.
Beacon is an app for recording precarious situations. Its purpose is to give people, especially vulnerable populations, a way to safely document encounters they have. The idea is to be quick, simple, and reliable, and to provide durable storage. We are currently working with community partners to test the app after initial positive reception. There are a number of use cases that we are exploring (e.g. protection for potential victims of harassment or sexual assault; potential victims of inappropriate interactions from police; ways for individuals to share their stories safely to improve public policy). We are exploring ways to make Beacon more practical to use in the moment. With thanks to the EPS / UofA Seed Grant for funding.
